This distinction catches people out. You are not trying to hit 21, you are trying to finish with a better total than the dealer without going over. A hand of 17 wins comfortably when the dealer busts, and reaching for a perfect total is how good hands get thrown away.
Cards count at face value, picture cards count as ten, and an ace counts as one or eleven depending on whichever helps your hand. The dealer shows one card face up, and that single card is the most useful piece of information you have when deciding what to do.
Go past 21 and the hand is lost immediately, regardless of what the dealer holds. That asymmetry is where the house edge lives.

What each action actually does
Stand
Keep your total and pass to the dealer. Standing on a moderate hand against a weak dealer card is often correct, because the dealer has to keep drawing and may bust without your help.
Double
Double the stake and take exactly one more card. Powerful on totals where a ten-value card gives you a commanding hand, costly when used on hands that need more than one card to recover.
Blackjack
An ace with a ten-value card in the opening two. The best possible start, settled immediately unless the dealer matches it. Payout terms are published in the game rules on Shuffle.
Being straight about strategy: optimal play reduces the house edge, it does not reverse it. Blackjack remains a game the house wins over time, and there is no decision chart, progression or pattern that changes that. Treat strategy as a way to lose more slowly and enjoy the hand, not as a route to profit.
